What is Cosmetology? | A Washington State Guide

Cosmetology is the professional study of beauty: the art, science, and business of hair, makeup, nails, and so much more. It is one of the most versatile fields in the beauty industry, and honestly, one of the most underestimated. Most people think cosmetology means haircuts. The reality is that a well-trained cosmetologist can offer a full range of services, from color and chemical treatments to makeup application, braiding, and beyond. It takes real skill, real science, and a genuine love of working with people.

If you have ever wondered what cosmetologists actually do, what school looks like, or whether this path might be right for you, you are in the right place. Here is an honest look at what cosmetology is and what it takes to build a career in it.

What is Cosmetology School?

Cosmetology school is where you earn the training and hours required to sit for your state licensing exam. In Washington State, becoming a licensed cosmetologist requires 1,600 hours of professional training at a state-approved school.

But cosmetology school is not just about logging hours. A good program teaches you why things work, not just how to do them. You learn the science behind every service, build real skills on real clients, and leave prepared for the licensing exam and for what comes after it.

At Evergreen Beauty College, EBC’s Cosmetology program is a hybrid program, meaning your training combines time on campus with a distance education component you can complete from home. The program is also designed with flexibility in mind. Whether you are working, raising a family, or just need a schedule that fits your real life, EBC offers options to make it work.

What Do You Learn in Cosmetology School?

Evergreen Beauty College’s Cosmetology program is organized across three phases. This curriculum is built to take you from a complete beginner to a licensed professional.

Phase I is all about building your foundation. You will study health, safety, and sanitation, science theory, haircutting, color, and chemical processing, along with professional ethics, personal development, and human relations. Your first haircuts happen on mannequins, which is a relief when you are just starting out, and gives you the confidence to step onto the salon floor ready.

Phase II takes you to the salon floor. You begin working with real guests and expand your skill set to include barbering, straight razor technique, beard design and mustache trimming, braiding, updos, blowouts, permanent waving, artificial hair and hair additions, skin care, manicuring and pedicuring, and much more. This is where theory becomes practice and your technical skills start to feel natural.

Phase III prepares you for life after school. You will work through state board exam preparation, build a professional portfolio, and write a resume and cover letter. Students who secure an externship opportunity will also complete that as part of this phase. You will also go through EBC’s Beyond Beauty Business Training, which covers the practical knowledge you need to manage your career, understand the industry, and work with confidence from day one.

What Can You Do With a Cosmetology License?

A cosmetology license opens more doors than most people realize. Licensed cosmetologists work in salons, spas, film and theater production, editorial and photoshoot settings, and luxury resort environments. Many eventually rent a suite or open their own salon.

Because the training covers such a wide range of services, including hair, skin, and nails, a cosmetology license gives you more flexibility than a more specialized credential. You can start broad and develop a specialty over time, or build a full-service practice from the beginning.

How Long Does Cosmetology School Take?

Washington State requires 1,600 hours of training to sit for the cosmetology licensing exam. At EBC, most students complete those hours in about 12 to 14 months, depending on the schedule path they choose and their attendance. Because the program is hybrid, part of your training can be completed from home on your own schedule through our distance education component.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cosmetology and esthetics?
Cosmetology covers a broad range of services including hair cutting, color, chemical treatments, skin care, and nail services. Esthetics focuses specifically on skincare and facial treatments. If you are passionate about all areas of beauty, cosmetology may be the right fit. If skin is your primary interest, esthetics is the more focused path.

Do you need experience to enroll in cosmetology school?
No experience is required. Cosmetology programs are designed to take you from beginner to licensed professional. What matters most is your interest in the field and your commitment to the training.

What is the Washington State cosmetology licensing exam?
After completing your 1,600 training hours, you will take a written and practical exam through Prov, Washington State’s licensing examination provider. Your school’s Phase III curriculum should include dedicated state board preparation before you graduate.

Is cosmetology school worth it?
For the right person, yes. A cosmetology license offers career flexibility, creative fulfillment, and the opportunity to build real relationships with clients who come back to you again and again. Whether your goal is to work in a high-end salon, go independent, or eventually run your own business, cosmetology provides a strong and versatile foundation.

What does EBC’s hybrid cosmetology program include?
EBC’s hybrid program combines on-campus training in our professional salons with a distance education component you complete from home. You will graduate with hands-on experience working with real clients, a completed portfolio, and preparation for both your licensing exam and your first job.

If cosmetology sounds like the right path for you, Evergreen Beauty College is a great place to start. Our program is built to develop well-trained professionals from the inside out: the skills, the confidence, and the business knowledge to build a career you are genuinely proud of.
